Narrow lots, old trees and storm surge worries
Many South Tampa homes sit on narrow lots with short driveways, sometimes just two strips of pavement leading back to a garage. Live oaks and other mature trees shade a lot of streets, and their roots push upward under driveways and along edges. Raised sections create trip hazards and gaps where water enters.
Because parts of the peninsula are close to the water, storm surge and flooding during hurricane season are real considerations. Pavement that is slightly higher than its surroundings, or that has a swale beside it, copes better with a storm. Commercial lots along the main roads face a different challenge, with small footprints, tight turning room and a lot of foot traffic across the surface.
