Step 1 of 3

What do you need?

Why do potholes form on Tampa pavement?

A pothole starts with water. Rain gets in through cracks and soaks into the base. Traffic then pushes on the weakened area, and the asphalt breaks apart. In Tampa the cause is usually washout. Heavy summer storms carry sand out from under the surface, leaving a void that collapses under tires. Heat also dries and ages asphalt, so the surface cracks more easily.

Potholes rarely appear out of nowhere. They grow from cracks, soft spots and places where water collects. That is why a small hole should be fixed early. A hole the size of a plate can become a much larger and costlier problem after another wet season. If many holes are appearing across a lot or driveway, the base may be failing and a larger repair such as commercial paving may be the honest answer.

How does asphalt patching work?

There are two main approaches, and the difference matters.

Quick fill

Cold patch material is dropped into the hole and tamped down. It is fast and can hold for a short while, but it often fails in wet weather. It is best seen as a temporary fix.

Cut out and rebuild

The crew saws square edges around the damaged area, removes the broken asphalt and any wet or soft material, then compacts the base. Fresh hot asphalt is placed in layers and rolled flat. A properly made patch is level with the surrounding pavement and bonds at the edges.

We recommend the second method for most holes, because it removes the cause rather than hiding it. For long cracks and edge wear that have not yet become holes, crack filling is a cheaper way to stop the damage before it starts.

What changes the price of pothole repair?

We do not name prices before we see the damage. The main factors are listed here.

  • Number and size of the repairs. Several small patches can cost close to one large one because of setup time.
  • Depth of damage. A deep hole needs more base material and more layers.
  • Method. A temporary fill costs less than a full cut-out patch, but it does not last as long.
  • Base condition. Wet or washed out ground must be removed and replaced.
  • Access. Parked cars, gates and narrow entries add time.
  • Minimum job size. Small repairs still need a crew, a truck and a roller to be done correctly.

A written quote that lists each repair location prevents surprises and helps you compare offers.

One patch is often finished in a few hours once the crew is on site. A driveway with a single repair may take half a day, and a lot with many repairs can take a day or two. The patch can usually take traffic once the asphalt has cooled, though hot Florida weather can lengthen that. Your crew will tell you when it is safe to drive over it.

Wet ground slows everything. Asphalt cannot be placed in standing water or on a soaked base, so Tampa's rainy season can push repairs back. If a hole is dangerous, tell the crew so it can be marked off or temporarily filled until a proper repair can be done. What should I expect on the day and when should I call?

Park away from the repair area. The crew marks out the patch, cuts and removes the damaged material, prepares the base and places the asphalt. Expect a saw, a small roller and some noise and dust. When finished, the edges should be tight and the surface level.

Questions about paving in Tampa

Why do potholes keep coming back after a quick fix?

A quick fill sits in a hole without fixing the cause. If water is still getting under the surface, or the base is soft, the new material pops out again with the next storm. A cut-out patch removes the weak material, rebuilds the base and bonds new asphalt to firm edges, so it lasts much longer.

Can you repair a pothole during the rainy season?

It depends on the weather that day. Asphalt should not be placed on wet or flooded ground, so repairs are scheduled for dry spells. If a hole is a safety risk, a temporary fill may be used until conditions allow a proper patch. Tell us about the hazard and we will explain the options honestly.

How do I know whether I need a patch or a new surface?

Look at how much of the pavement is damaged. A few separate holes with sound pavement around them can be patched. If cracks cover most of the surface, the ground sinks in many places or patches keep failing, the base is probably the issue and resurfacing or replacement is a better long-term choice.

Is a pothole on my property a liability concern?

It can be. If customers, tenants or visitors use your pavement, a known hazard may lead to trouble if someone is hurt. This is a legal matter, so talk to your insurer or attorney for specifics. From the paving side, we can fix the hole and help you keep the surface safe.

Can you match the color of the old asphalt?

New asphalt is darker than old, faded pavement, so a patch will stand out at first. Over time sun fades it closer to the surrounding surface. Sealcoating the whole area after the repair evens out the color. Ask us about that step if appearance matters on your driveway or lot.
